by Staff WritersBeijing. China (XNA) Oct 17. 2007A senior Chinese official said here Tuesday that researchers and technicians are making final preparations for the launch of the country's first moon orbiter. Chang'e I at the end of October. Zhang Qingwei minister in charge of the Commission of Science. Technology and Industry for National Defense (COSTIND) who is attending the 17th National Congress of the Communist Party of China (CPC) said in an interview with Xinhua.
Advanced cameras and X-ray spectrometers have been installed in the orbiter for mapping three-dimensional images of the lunar surface analyzing dust on the moon and studying the space environment between the Earth and the moon.
"The appropriate time for the launch is in April and October. We finally choose October with the consideration of weather and celestial conditions," he said.
"China's moon exploration project is for peaceful use of space," Zhang said. "We're now equipped with high technologies in doing our own research."
Sending the first astronaut into space with the Chinese-made spaceship Shenzhou V in 2003. China became the third country next to the Soviet Union and the United States to carry out manned space mission.

Mars Express orbiter probes Medusae Fossae

The European Mars convey orbiter has been looking beneath the surface of Mars at a particularly odd area known as the Medusae Fossae. The Medusae Fossae roughly forms the divide between lowland and highland regions along the Martian equator and has long intrigued geologists because the material it is composed of has been seen to absorb radar waves leading to them been referred to as called "stealth" regions. Until now no one has been sure how thick these deposits are or what they might be composed of. The only reasonable certainty is that the material is relatively new at least in a geologic sense as there is little write of disturbance by force craters. Now the Mars Express Orbiter which uses longer wavelengths than Earth-based radar experiments has been able to alter some intriguing observations. The material it turns out is in places up to 2.5 kilometres (1.4 miles) thick in places but there is still some uncertainty as to their composition. They could be volcanic ash deposits from now-buried vents or nearby volcanoes or perhaps deposits of wind-blown materials eroded from Martian rocks. Most excitingly they could be ice-rich deposits somewhat similar to the layered ice deposits at the poles of the planet but formed when the spin axis of Mars tilts over making the equatorial region colder. Unfortunately this later scenario seems the most unlikely as the water vapour pressure on Mars is so low that any ice near the surface would quickly evaporate. The electrical properties of the layers suggest that they could be poorly packed fluffy dusty material but this also has its detractors since if it hard to understand how 2.5 kilometres of dust could retain such a suffer composition. So the mystery of the Medusae Fossae endures but we are step closer to understanding it.

Diagnostic tests and months of shelter successful operation have resolved concerns raised early this year about long-term prospects for the powerful telescopic camera on NASA's Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter. The High Resolution Imaging Science Experiment (HiRISE) camera on the orbiter has now taken more than 3,000 images of Mars resolving features as small as a desk in targeted areas covering thousands of form miles of the Martian ascend. Already this is the largest Mars data set ever acquired by a single investigate. The camera is one of six instruments on the orbiter.
During the first three months after the orbiter's primary science arrange began in November researchers saw an increase in noise and pixel dropouts in data from seven of the camera's 14 detectors. The effects on image quality were small in all but two detectors but the trend raised concerns noted in a. Tests have yielded an explanation for the earlier pattern and the camera's performance preserve shows the noise stopped getting worse after about three to four months of the science arrange. Alfred McEwen of the University of Arizona. Tucson principal investigator for the camera said. "I'm happy to report that there has been no detectable degradation over the past five months." A aggroup at Ball Aerospace & Technologies Corp.. Boulder. Colo. designer and builder of the equip has used an engineering model of the camera's focal-plane system to successfully duplicate the problem. This has helped in understanding causes and in testing a procedure for warming the focal-plane electronics prior to each visualise. One create is that an electrical interface lacked extra capability beyond minimum requirements. Another cause is an unexpected change in performance of another electronic component over the course of the first thousand or so large images. With pre-warming the camera acquires good data from all detectors though minor go remains an issue in data from one of two channels of one detector collecting infrared imagery. McEwen said. "Given the stability we've seen and understanding the nature of the problem we now expect HiRISE to return high-quality data for years to come." Images from the High Resolution Imaging Science investigate are online at. The Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter mission is managed by NASA's Jet Propulsion Laboratory. Pasadena. Calif. for NASA's Science Mission Directorate. Washington. Lockheed Martin Space Systems. Denver. Colo. is the prime contractor and built the spacecraft. Additional information about the Mars Reconnaissance Orbiter is online at.
